March 28, 2019 –Kingsport Housing & Redevelopment Authority (KHRA) joined with residents of Holly Hills Apartments and members of the community Thursday to cut the ribbon and officially open the new Holly Hills playground.
Located at 3421 Watterson Street, the playground was made possible by a $25,000 grant from the Lowe’s Foundation, with support from the Lowe’s Home Improvement Center on West Stone Drive.
“Lowe’s is committed to giving back to the communities that we serve,” said Tommy McGlothlin, sales specialist – Pro Services with Lowe’s on West Stone Drive. “We hope that the children of the Holly Hills community will enjoy this playground as much as we enjoyed partnering with KHRA to make it a reality.”
KHRA Executive Director Terry Cunningham said the new playground will provide safe play time for the children at Holly Hills. The apartment complex was built in 1984, and the original playground equipment was made of metal that had rusted over the years, posing a hazard to children. In addition, the original playground equipment was scattered in various locations throughout the apartment complex.
The new playground provides a centralized location where the children can play. KHRA was able to purchase park benches where parents can sit and visit while their children play.
“This is a fantastic addition to Holly Hills. It looks great, and I know the children here will enjoy it,” Cunningham said. “We want to thank the Lowe’s Foundation, the local Lowe’s employees and Vulcan Rock Quarry for supporting us through this process.”
Vulcan Rock Quarry donated the gravel for the playground, and the local Lowe’s employees donated bags of dirt and flowers to the project.
